Day 1: GENEROUS through Teaching
Cowboy Church and School
When Rebecca Hampton began rescuing horses on her farm, God had a bigger plan for her to help rescue children and families in Pickens County. Drugs, teen pregnancies, illiteracy, as well as mental, physical, and sexual abuse are no strangers to this tip of the Appalachian sector of Georgia. She began this rescue by renovating her barn into the Cowboy Church, inviting preachers to share the Gospel.
Three years ago the vision to begin a private Christian school also became a reality. The one-room teaching area has expanded from seven kids to 24, now meeting in two areas of her expansive farmhouse. Victoria will be the first student to graduate this year, as she goes full-time to Shorter University after being dually enrolled throughout her senior year. Powerful lifechange is the norm now as the founder states, “I am raising up an army of warriors and worshipers who are making a difference in our world.”
Georgia Baptist Associational Missionary Alan Morris and his wife, Rebecca, have made a large impact on the church and school. Rebecca teaches in the school, and Alan helps to direct the church as a chaplain and resource, bringing in the preachers who share God’s truth. Alan estimates that 99% of those with whom they minister are low income, at-risk kids, who would have never gone to college or finished school with reading profi- ciency. He says, “The two Rebeccas are not just equine therapists/teachers, they have become mother and grandmother figures to the students, helping to create a life-church and life changing environment.”
Current student Elizabeth, who sang at last year’s annual Georgia Baptist Convention in Savannah and stole the hearts of hundreds in attendance, has a YouTube video which has gone viral. The worship song she sang has had more hits than any other Georgia Baptist video – ever. Her plans include attending Truett McConnell University upon President Emir Caner’s personal invitation.
• Ask God to draw more students and parents to the Cowboy Church for life change and renewal.
• Thank our Savior for the current impact of faithful teachers like Rebecca Hampton and Alan and Rebecca Morris.
